Odisha eves shine in Asian Rugby Sevens Tournament

Indian women team, featuring four players from Odisha, finished third in the Asian Rugby Sevens Tournament, which concluded at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai today. Chinese Taipei men and South Korea women emerged champions in the two-day tournament. Indian men finished sixth after losing to Lebanon.

Bhagyalaxmi Barik, Sanjukta Munda, Hupi Majhi and Meerarani Hembram are the four Odisha players, who represented Indian women team. All of them are students of Bhubaneswar-based educational institutions KISS and KIIT. Manas Kumar Jena of Odisha was the assistant coach and manager of Indian men and women teams.

India beat Nepal 41-0; beat Syria 47-0; drew with Guam 12-12; lost to Philippines 7-43; lost to UAE 7-38; beat Bangladesh 31-5.
FINAL PLACINGS: 1st/2nd: Chinese Taipei bt Thailand 36-21. 3rd/4th: Philippines bt UAE 38-21. 5th/6th: Lebanon bt India 19-7. 7th/8th: Bangladesh bt Syria 26-24. 9th/10th: Indonesia beat Nepal 34-0.
WOMEN: India beat Nepal 36-0; lost to South Korea 0-26; beat Indonesia 71-0.
FINAL PLACINGS: 1st/2nd: South Korea bt Guam 24-19. 3rd/4th: India bt Nepal 39-0.
